01.04.2017 | In 2014 the number of people speaking French across the world was estimated to number 240 million. The Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie has in total 84 members. It has set itself the task and aim of promoting the French language and its cultural diversity in all its forms. In addition it wants to expand cooperation, education and research; create relationships between people and counteract conflicts.
The Fête de la Francophonie which is organised jointly by representatives from francophone embassies and diplomatic missions in Berlin is aimed at families, young people and schools in Berlin and is enjoying growing popularity. Responsibility for the organisation this year falls to the Embassy of Belgium, the Vertretung der Deutschsprachigen Gemeinschaft, der Föderation Wallonie-Brüssel und der Wallonie and the Vertretung des Saarlandes beim Bund. The event is part of the Berliner Senatsverwaltung für Bildung’s Jahr der Französischen Sprache and the Frankfurt Book Fair’s Guest of Honour Programme “Frankfurt in French”.
The event’s slogan this year is “Beyond Borders”, «Au-délà des frontières». This slogan mirrors the organisation’s key ideas: to renounce borders, value diversity and celebrate all that connects us.
The EUNIC members involved are the Vertretung der Deutschsprachigen Gemeinschaft, der Föderation Wallonie-Brüssel und der Wallonie, the Institut français, the Slowakische Kulturinstitut und the Embassy of Switzerland.
